Cataract in children

Cataract can affect a child as young as a newborn. The cataract in children causes severe damage to the vision of the child and needs to be treated as an emergency.

There are various causes like hereditary causes, genetic, infectious, metabolic, eye injuries causes etc that lead to cataract in children. It is not possible to ascertain the cause in every child.

However, sometimes investigations are needed to find the cause as they have a big impact on a child's life span and future quality of life.

Treatment

  • The treatment of cataract in a child is usually a minor surgery at the earliest.
  • After the cataract surgery, the child is prescribed spectacles / contact lenses / nothing.
  • Cataract surgery in a child is totally different as compared to cataract surgery in adults. There are many issues that are to be dealt with in a different manner in terms of examination as well as surgeries.
